Treat Skin Cancer, Acne With OLEDs

Posted by La Hunter on 21st December 2008

OLEDs boast great resolutions and energy efficiency, but they could also be used to treat skin cancer and acne. A U.K. team is developing wearable OLED stickers that’ll cure your skin ailments on the go.

Many skin cancers are currently treated by a combo of light and drugs (called photodynamic therapy), but current light sources are large and the therapy requires lengthy hospital visits. Lumicure Ltd. Is looking to use OLEDs in the treatment instead.

The OLEDs would be attached to sticking plaster that can be placed on the diseased skin. Not only will it be more comfortable, the patient could possibly do the therapy from home. Lumicure says it’ll have the device out by Q4 of 2009, and that they’re working on something similar to treat acne as well. Source Gizmodo – [Printed Electronics via OLED info]

What a brilliant innovation. An Organic Light Emitting Diode, fixed in place by a skin patch that can be worn by the patient, while he or she works, sleeps and plays. The day may soon come when these devices will be dispensed OTC from selected outlets, to ease the burden of the millions of people suffering from skin disorders, such as acne and skin cancer.

Acne Control And Good Health

Posted by La Hunter on 16th December 2008

The serious business of controlling acne outbreaks, is hampered at times by a number of misconceptions that many people accept. Number one is the saying, “it’s all part of growing up”. Even though the majority of people that suffer from acne, are first attacked during their teenage years, there are many other youngsters that pass through adolescence without displaying any acne symptoms whatsoever. It does not follow that they “haven’t grown up”, because they did not suffer from bouts of acne.

Of course, hormonal activity that occurs during puberty, does affect different people in different ways, and it is generally accepted that this increase in hormones, indirectly brings about acne symptoms. Some people can suffer from severe outbreaks of acne, whereas others only suffer the odd pimple.

Many other people suffer from acne later in life, even when they are in their thirties or forties, so there are other factors that can trigger bouts of acne. Researchers have found that there are just as many adults suffering from acne, as there are teenagers. This information alone, is enough to dispel the myth that acne is a condition of growing up.

The skin of the body is an essential organ and, in order to give it the best chance of controlling skin disorders, it needs to be properly cared for on a regular basis. General physical health is most important, and this starts with eating the proper foods, getting regular exercise and adopting regular sleep patterns. When the body is in good physical condition, it shows by giving the skin a fresh, natural look.

The skin itself should be groomed daily, by washing no more than twice a day using mild soaps, and by applying approved skin care products that will nourish, protect and care for the bodies largest organ. While it may be necessary to expose the body to the sun’s rays for short periods, care must be taken to apply sunscreen when outdoors, and to avoid the afternoon sun completely.

Skin Disorder Treated With Stem Cells From Bone Marrow

Posted by La Hunter on 14th December 2008

In a new study, scientists have found that stem cells from bone marrow may act as a novel therapeutic option to treat a disease called epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a disorder characterized by extraordinarily fragile skin.

The debilitating condition is caused by significantly reduced collagen type 7 protein (col7) production, a key component of the anchoring fibrils that connect the cutaneous membranes to the dermis of the skin and mucosal tissues in the gastrointestinal tract.

Currently, there’s no cure for the disease, and palliative care includes complex bandaging, surgical removal of damaged tissue, and nutritional support.

“We have been looking into stem cells as viable treatment options for correction of conditions such as epidermolysis bullosa, because they can produce extracellular matrix proteins. In this condition, the skin, the largest organ in the body, can significantly benefit from a renewable source of healthy cells that can help improve the connection between the dermis and epidermis and strengthen the skin against everyday stresses,” said Jakub Tolar, MD, PhD, of the University of Minnesota and lead author of the study.

For the study, the researchers worked with a mouse model of RDEB-infused bone marrow cells to determine if they would increase production of the col7 protein and formation of anchoring fibrils, and improve survival in the mouse recipients.

So, they used bone marrow cells enriched for hematopoietic (stem cells that can develop into most blood cell types) and progenitor cells to increase the concentration of cells with the capacity to produce col7. Source Medindia

Researchers are continually exploring new horizons in order to rid mankind of incurable skin disorders, such as acne, and epidermolysis bullosa. Stem cells from bone marrow is yet another tool that is currently being developed by modern science, which may produce a permanent cure for these serious types of skin diseases.

Posted by La Hunter on 12th December 2008

NEW YORK, Market Leading Light-Based Skincare System No Longer Requires A Prescription

Tanda, a leading home-use light-based skincare technology is now the first FDA cleared at-home light therapy device for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne available in the U.S. without a prescription. This FDA marketing clearance allows the sale of this revolutionary new skincare treatment over-the-counter to Acne sufferers. Tanda offers consumers across the United States a safe and effective over-the-counter home-use device to clear existing acne blemishes and help prevent further breakouts.

Both Tanda and Tanda Professional – available through skin care professionals – use 414nm blue LED light that is scientifically proven to naturally, gently and safely kill the P.acnes bacteria that cause mild to moderate inflammatory acne. Blue light energy has a phototoxic effect on the P.acnes bacteria causing it to self-destruct, effectively removing the cause of an inflammatory response. A company-sponsored In-vitro study showed an 86% reduction in P.acnes bacteria colonies after a 6-minute treatment with Tanda Clear.

“In the clinical trial we conducted with Tanda Professional Clear 414nm blue LED light, we found that daily self treatment using the device reduced the number of acne lesions significantly. Moreover the study demonstrated a significant improvement of the subjects’ skin condition,” said Dr Michael Gold of the Tennessee Clinical Research Centre, “Study subjects also found the treatment user-friendly and easy-to-use at home.” Now this professional therapy is available over-the-counter.

The Tanda Clear Acne Light Therapy Treatment is available exclusively at Sephora, sephora.com and tandaskincare.com. The Tanda Professional Skincare System is available at physician offices and medi spas, visit tandaskincare.com to find a retailer close to you. Source Examiner

Acne Photocure Lamp By Sagentia

Posted by La Hunter on 5th December 2008

Sagentia, the world leading product development, technology consulting and IP exploitation company based in Cambridge, UK, has deployed its full concept through to manufacture service to ensure the rapid and successful development of a new photodynamic treatment (PDT) lamp.

Acne ControlNorwegian-based pharmaceutical company Photocure had identified the need for a new, large-area PDT lamp that could be used in combination with its proprietary pharmaceutical VisonacTM for the treatment of moderate to severe acne.

With time to market and cost of development as key issues, the company recognised that a highly focused development programme would be required. The aim was to achieve a production-ready device for planned Phase III clinical trials starting in the first half of 2009.

Photocure chose Sagentia as its development partner due to the company’s track record in the medical device sector, its ability to offer a rapid concept to manufacture development programme and the assurance that Sagentia could offer through its accreditation to ISO 13485 (the medical device quality management standard).

The fully developed lamp – known as Aktilite® CL512 – comprises two light panels with 512 light emitting diodes that deliver a controlled dose of red light. The panels can be adjusted to treat either the face or flat areas such as the chest or back. A mobile trolley stand and articulating support arm are used to position the lamp over the treatment area.

Based on Photocure’s IP and product requirements, Sagentia undertook a complete concept to manufacture product development programme comprising analytical modelling to identify the best technical concept; all mechanical, electronics, software and optical development work; validation and optimisation of advanced design concepts with clinical stakeholders; the establishment of an extended production supply chain, notably in the Far East; approvals testing for EU and US regulatory requirements; and finally transfer to production using Photocure’s existing European sub-contract manufacturer.

Photocure’s brief called for a large area PDT lamp that could provide uniform illumination of the whole face. To meet this need, Sagentia developed a 3D optical model to simulate illumination across the entire face and investigate the performance of different product concepts. Sagentia’s 3D model was able to determine that full face illumination could be achieved using just two angled lamp panels rather than the three to five previously considered necessary.

At key points during the development programme, Sagentia solicited feedback from clinical / nursing professionals to ensure that user requirements were correctly identified and validated. This included one-to-one clinician interviews, focus groups to explore the range of product concepts and usability workshops to validate prototype designs.

One of the primary reasons for the rapid and successful conclusion of the project was Sagentia’s ability to manage and co-ordinate a multi-disciplinary in-house team of engineers, scientists and technologists, many of whom had direct medical device development experience. This extended from initial product conceptualisation through to the establishment of a Far East network of suppliers. Sagentia’s expertise in this area enabled the company to build a supply chain for low volume, high quality mechanical parts at 40 per cent of the cost of equivalent European items.

Kjetil Hestdal, President and CEO of Photocure, said: “The Aktilite® CL512 lamp is an essential component of the VisonacTM photodynamic therapy procedure and I am pleased that, as a result of Sagentia’s swift and successful product development programme, it is available for use in the Phase III trials.” Source: Sagentia

European technology, has produced another effective means of acne control that may benefit the millions of people, from all around the world, who suffer from this most common skin complaint.
